What HVAC Work Costs in Washington County - And Why

No dollar figures here. Just an honest look at what drives the price, how the estimate works, and questions worth asking before you hire anyone.

HVAC pricing isn't a mystery, but it isn't one number either. Two homes with the same problem can need very different work, and the only honest way to price a job is to look at it in person. Here's what actually drives the cost of heating, cooling, water heater and gas line work in Washington County and the South Hills — and how our estimate process works.

What drives the cost

These are the factors that move a price up or down — and why a real estimate has to happen at your home.

Repair vs. full replacement

A repair is the parts and labor to fix what's there. A full replacement is the equipment plus everything that goes with installing it. They're priced very differently.

Equipment size and efficiency

Bigger systems and higher-efficiency equipment cost more. The right size and efficiency for your home is part of what we figure out when we look at it.

Existing ductwork and venting

If your ductwork or venting needs changes to work with new equipment, that's part of the job. Good ductwork that's already in shape keeps the price down.

Gas line or electrical changes

A new furnace or water heater can need gas line or electrical work to meet what the equipment requires. That work is part of the cost when it's needed.

Access — attic, crawlspace, tight basement

Equipment that's hard to get to takes more time and labor. A unit in a tight basement or a crawlspace costs more to work on than one with room around it.

Permits where your township requires them

Some townships require permits for this work. Where they do, that's part of doing the job the right way, and it's part of the cost.

How the estimate works

1

We look at it in person

We come to your home and take a real look at the system, the ductwork, the venting, the access, and what the job actually involves. No guessing from a desk.

2

We explain the options

We lay out what we found and what your options are — repair, replacement, or both — in plain language, so you understand what each one means.

3

You get a price before any work starts

The price comes before any work begins, not after. You decide what makes sense for your home and your budget. Nothing happens until you say go.

That's the whole process. No high-pressure sales, no surprise add-ons after we start. If we find something unexpected mid-job, we stop and talk to you about it before anything else happens. The price we give you is the price before work starts.

Questions to ask any HVAC contractor before you hire them

These four questions tell you a lot about who you're letting into your home.

Who will actually do the work?

You want to know whether the person at your door is the person who owns the company, or whether the job gets handed off to whoever the dispatcher sends. With us, the owner does the work himself.

Is the price in writing?

A verbal estimate is easy to walk back. A price in writing protects you and makes the scope of the work clear before anyone picks up a tool.

What is the labor warranty in writing?

Ask what the warranty covers and for how long, and get it in writing. The warranty on the work itself is separate from any warranty on the equipment.

Who owns the company?

Whether a company is locally owned or owned by an out-of-state private equity firm changes how decisions get made and who you reach when you call. It's a fair question to ask.

We started Hometown Comfort because Washington County deserves better than the private-equity runaround. The person at your door is the person who owns the company. Every job is done by the owner. The price is in writing, and you know exactly who owns the company.
